About us

The Center for Complexity Studies (CCS) is a non-profit non-governmental organization with no political affiliation, dedicated to promoting the paradigm of Complexity. Created in 1996, it is one of the first private research centers in Romania, and the most important Think Tank in Complexity in our country.

While most of the Center’s activities are carried out locally, we foster strong international ties with members and contributors worldwide. Recently, the Center has received special recognition by affiliation with UNESCO, as UNESCO Club.

Mission

The main objectives of CCS are to stimulate the diffusion of scientific ideas and theories of complex systems within the whole of Romanian society, and to act as a Complexity Think Tank. In order to achieve this aim, CCS is assuming a pro-active role as a tri-lateral bridge between:

  • Academics, researchers, and artists.
  • Companies and business leaders capable of actual implementation of complexity concepts on the market.
  • Policy-makers and the civil society.

By employing the most recent results in interdisciplinary applied research, this interaction is channeled towards the creation, design and conceptualization of new theoretical models, as well as novel prototypes and products that exploit nonlinear phenomena (chaos, synergetics, self-organized criticality, fractal geometry, etc.).

The ultimate goals of the Center’s activities are:
  • To assist and promote the capitalization of the intellectual potential of the young generation, and to channel its energy towards enhancing human performance, preserving the environment, and increasing the country’s economic output.
  • To contribute significantly to the re-shaping of the Romanian economy and society, by improving some or all of the steps (data mining, processing, interpretation, analysis, practical applications, implementation, and result evaluation) leading to the formulation of key social and economic policies. Special emphasis is placed on aspects related to the realization of a Knowledge-based Society.

To achieve these goals, CCS will

  • Use its scientific competence to act as a “topic-oriented” filter at the interface between theory and applications.
  • Identify important ‘seed’ ideas and topics.
  • Form the team(s) necessary to develop the initial idea/topic into a concept or a prototype.
  • Locate and pursue the appropriate funding resources;
  • Locate potential beneficiaries interested in taking over the prototype and transforming it into a marketable product or a social/economic policy.

CCS pioneers and actively pursues means of enhancing social awareness towards the profound scientific, technical, managerial and political changes triggered by the generalization of the information-based society. Special attention is given to understanding these changes in order to reduce or eliminate the fear and stress induced by change. These topics are debated, explained and discussed in conferences, radio and TV interviews and round tables, newspapers and scientific magazines. Thus, CCS tries to contribute to a better human society and directly support the modernization and evolution of mankind.

Funding

CCS has successfully carried out projects financed by the European Commission (EC), the PHARE Program, USAID, UNESCO, and the Romanian Ministry of Education and Research.
