10 years of CCS

During its 10 years of activity, the Center for Complexity Studies has initiated a useful dialogue with many representatives of the Romanian society: from students and teachers to business leaders and government figures. The outcome of this dialogue is a list of conclusions, which describe the current stage of Complexity awareness in Romania:

  • There is a strong adverse reaction from all layers of society to socio-economic change brought on by globalization and imminent European integration. This reaction threatens to compromise the social and economic well-being of the citizens of Romania for many years to come. In all regions of the country, there is a profound lack of information and education of entrepreneurial culture, while the concepts and attitudes of the information-based society (de-localization of work, dematerialization of products, web-based products and services) are still not perceived as good for business or for the basis of a career;
  • There is no declared interest on the part of Romanian authorities to educate the people at large on current developments at a global scale, on the significance and consequences of modern industrial development and globalization, or on the environment that these processes are happening in (climate change, destruction of biodiversity, global energy shortages, etc.);
  • Even though every university in the country has its own specialists or workgroups dedicated which specialize in complexity-related research (nonlinear dynamics, chaos, self-organization, agent-based modeling, etc.), one can clearly say that there is still no critical mass of researchers capable of carrying on innovative research on Complexity into the future. There is a nationwide lack of sustained interest in this field of knowledge (Complexity is not included in educational curricula, there are no national or international research meetings on the topic, and no dedicated library or database of books or articles on the subject of Complexity).

At CCS, we strongly believe that a solid awareness and grasp of the concepts and ideas of Complexity are the key to a strong and sustainable development of our country, in the context of globalization and European integration. In these times of change, Romania needs to reinvent itself, and find new uses for its world-renowned pool of talent and creativity.  In this context, CCS vows to continue its 10-year history of activities dedicated to promoting the paradigm of Complexity n Romania:

  • Courses, seminars, and public conferences which promote the methods and concepts of Complexity theory to students, the business community, and the government;
  • Summer schools and youth camps which introduce the ideas and applications of Complexity science in engineering, biology, social sciences, health, and education. A number of success stories speak for themselves: Atlantykron-Capidava, Fractal ‘xx – Raul Alb, Econophysics 2005 – Navodari, Dragomiresti, etc.;
  • Civic Initiative Campaigns (CIC, ACT2000, Brain Drain - Brain Regain);
  • Events dedicated to public education and raising awareness about current trends and developments in human society and the environment at a global scale (press campaigns, TV and radio shows, websites, discussion lists, etc.);
  • Events meant to stimulate youngsters towards a continuous self-improvement through education (the NEXUS and NEXUS – JUNIOR programs);
  • Events and activities meant to raise awareness and change mentalities within the Romanian population at large, trying to instill a pro-active and positive attitude towards creation of the Knowledge-Based Society in Romania (the Lisbon document)
  • Events and activities that stimulate the structuring of active public-private partnerships, capable of truly solving social, educational, and economic problems of the country.
