The massive social, economic and technological changes of the past decades are making education more crucial than ever. Education systems all over the world are struggling to ensure opportunities for all, to provide the necessary knowledge and skills, and to prepare their citizens for lifelong learning in the information age, as well as for the emergence of a knowledge-based society.
Within the context of the UN decade on Education for Sustainable Development and as a follow-up to the International GVRR-BBCS Workshop held in November 2004 in Kazan, the second event within the framework of the UNESCO Cross cutting project ”The Great Volga River Route – Uniting the Seas (Black, Baltic and Caspian Seas) in favour of World Heritage Education for Sustainable Development with support of ICTs” is held in Bucharest, Romania, from 28 to 31 July 2005.
For an online log of the event, please follow this link.

To enable teachers to develop and implement an ecological approach of WH and SD, that would allow students to:
- be sensitized about the preservation of environment and its impact on their well-being and health;
- become aware of the impact of human activities on the environment (transportation, urbanization, industrialization) and about natural disasters;
To identify threatened WH sites along the Volga River and BBC Seas and think about actions that could measure and remedy the negative impact;
To help young people acquire new skills to preserve WH and biosphere sites.
B) Specific
To exchange views and experiences on teaching and learning about WH and Sustainable Development and their ecological implications (discuss the implementation of the goals defined in the GVRR Plan of Action for 2004-2005);
For teachers, to discuss teaching the importance of the environmental dimension of the GVRR and various methods to develop student interest in this important field;
To present actual activities planned and implemented by schools, related to the environmental dimension of GVRR Project, and to share good practices, with special emphasis on ICT materials (demonstration of ICTs, exhibition).
