As of January 2007, the CCS proudly co-chairs the Complexity in Economics Commission, created within the Romanian Chamber of Commerce.

Between 15 and 20 July 2007, the Transylvanian resort of Sovata hosted an international conference/workshop on complex systems, co-organized by the CCS.

Big names such as A.-L. Barabasi, T. Vicsek, L. Chua, R. Sole, and S. Havlin, honored the event.

The Center for Complexity Studies recently celebrated 10 years of existence!

The CCS contributed the presentation “Complexity and Legal Physics” to an event organized by Transparency International – Romania at the Palace of Parliament. The meeting was dedicated to raising awareness about the indirect and sometimes counterintuitive effects of legislation on criminality in Romania.

CSC launched the seminar series!

These weekly meetings of the CCS workgroup are held every wednesday from 10:00 to 13:00 hours at the CCS office in the Bucharest Polythechnic. More details here.

Dr. Florin Munteanu successfully represented the CCS at the International Conference e-Challenges 2006 in Barcelona. The conference was a networking event in preparation for the launch of the FP7 research funding program from the European Commission.

Florin’s presentation Engines of Change: IT and Complexity are Shaping Tomorrow’s World (4.7 MB) was very well received. The CCS also contributed a number of project proposals, meant to outline the Center’s offer of scientific expertise and its commitment for international collaboration in the field of Complexity. Dr. Stefan Gheorghiu is the winner of a NATO Reintegration Grant, with the project titled “Advanced signal processing for feature extraction from geophysical data”. The study will be conducted within CCS, over a perieod of three years. We are proud to announce this as a success for our “Brain Regain” initiative. More details here.

The Center for Complexity Studies is now offering the International Master Program in Biodynamics, in partnership with the International Centre of Biodynamics in Bucharest.

The 2006 edition of the now traditional summer academy Atlantykron took place on the Capidava island on the Danube, between 4 and 13 August. The academy featured a Complexity Science workshop, hosted by CCS.

Renowned author and complexity specialist dr. John L. Casti, Ph.D., visited Bucharest in November 2005. John gave a workshop on Complexity and computer modeling in Economics, targeting top managers of Romanian firms. More details here.

On June 22, 2005, the Romanian Parliament hosted the first public debate bringing together lawmakers, businessmen, and physicists.

MODERN PHYSICS FOR A PROSPEROUS COUNTRY

The activity marked the International Year of Physics 2005, and was organized by
The Romanian Parliament,
The Horia Hulubei National Institute for Nuclear Physics and Technology,
The Romanian Space Agency ROSA,
The National Branch of UNESCO,
and the Center for Complexity Studies,

and initiated by private media companies Alpha TV, Radio Bucuresti, and Radio 3Net.

The discussions outlined the importance of government support for fundamental research, and the need for specific legislation facilitating private investment in science and technology.

In the context of the UN decade on Education for Sustainable Development, the second event within the framework of the UNESCO Cross cutting project ”The Great Volga River Route – Uniting the Seas (Black, Baltic and Caspian Seas) in favour of World Heritage Education for Sustainable Development with support of ICTs” was held in Bucharest, from 28 to 31 July 2005.

The first International Summer School
Econophysics and Complexity 2005”, Navodari, Romania, concluded successfully.

Graced by the attendance of a select group of international tutors and organized by the Academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest and the Center for Complexity Studies, the course promises to become a yearly event.
